Choosing a good book is no easy task. And for the first graders, coming to the library on their own it is a new adventure. As they begin to formally learn to read and write in English and Spanish, students start to feel motivated to connect with the language in written form. The first couple of weeks of classes, we sat on the carpet and discussed how Library was going to change from Kinder to 1st grade. We marked a before and after with how we changed buildings, teachers, and schedules. For example, before they had a teacher's aid accompany them, to help with their needs, now they must learn to be independent and follow the instructions of the librarian. We discussed what was expected of them, and what they expected of their time in the library, but most of all, the concept of CHOICE.
What does it mean to chose?
How do you know you are making a healthy choice?
We connected the concept of choice with the unit of inquiry, Who We Are, about how responsible choices help us achieve a healthy lifestyle. In the library, it is very important to learn to choose a good book. Some children have difficulty because they are still learning how to read, but we discovered the sometimes the illustrations tell a story on their own. With the use of just a bit of imagination, we can discover many different stories and ideas. The students help each other by not only observing the illustrations but also the language and consulting with friends.
